Tomato Kara/spicy Chutney


Tomato spicy chutney is a no onion chutney with the aromatic fried Chana dal, red chillies and a hint of garlic. This can be very well accompanied with soft idlis  or spongy uthappams/ dosa/set dosa/ rice roti/ puffed rice dosa/oats dosa. This spicy chutney has all the goodness of Chana dal & garlic. If you add fried Chana dal it adds extra flavour and taste to the chutney. If you want to add a tablespoon of coconut then it’s fine & good & garlic can also be avoided. So, this chutney can be used on vrad  days as no onion & garlic chutney. But I like this with garlic which gives an unique flavor. Sometimes we have this chutney with bread toast.

  • Tomato – 3 medium size
  • Chana dal – 2 tablespoons
  • Red chili – 7 to 9 ( depends on the spicyness of chili & your preference)
  • Garlic  -2 to 3 pods
  • Asafetida/Hing – 1/2 teaspoon
  • Salt to taste  
  • Any vegetable oil for frying & tempering -2 teaspoon 
  • For tempering, mustard seeds, split urad dal & curry leaves.


– Wash & cut the tomatoes into cubes. Peel the garlic & keep aside.

-Heat the frying pan with a teaspoon of oil in the medium/low flame & add Chana dal & garlic. Fry until the Chana   Dal becomes golden brown. Now sprinkle asfoetida/hing & Let it cool.

-Then add red chilies and then tomatoes and fry until it’s mushy. Let it cool.

-Now blend/ grind all the fried ingredients in a mixer grinder. No need to add water. Before serving definitely do the tempering/ tadka which is not to be skipped. Enjoy spicy chutney with idli/dosa.
